summer in the fields

July 7, 2011

for the second year in a row, i have a tiny orange and red marigold growing right outside my door, next to my rubber boots. last year, i planted the marigold seeds patricia gave me when i left chicago in a pot on the porch of my yurt. this year’s flower is a volunteer, growing out of a crack between the wall of the house and the cement of the narrow patio that encircles the bottom floor. it makes me smile every time i put on or take off my shoes going in and out of the house. lots of other loveliness in the fields as well — flowers and fruit and daily-growing leaves. this week’s box is awesome: strawberries (the last ones!), cauliflower, scarlet turnips, red cabbage, sugar snap peas, broccoli, zucchini, walla walla onions, kale, lettuce, arugula, basil and garlic scapes. hooray for summer bounty.
