another lovely lichen specimen

December 7, 2011

this one i encountered near my mother’s house on the summit — a twig surrounded by a whole colony of lichen beings. each lichen is a symbiotic partnership of two organisms in which a fungus provides the structure and an alga or cyanobacterium provides photosynthesis. the two different species that come together in a lichen do not exist in the same forms separate from one another — the presence of the other makes them what they are.

…….some think the same simbiosis applies within our species!….and then there is Lewis Thomas’ wonderful book, “The Medusa and the Snail”….
